Tim Korshunov
Artist / Animatronic engineer / Programmer

Hi!

I'm Tim, a mechanical engineer, programmer and visual artist.

For the last 14 years, I've been doing practical SFX, animatronics, mechanical and electronic devices for movies, advertising, museums, exhibitions and events.

I contribute to projects of artists/studios to bring their ideas to physical world.

Made hardware for international projects: Nike art construction on Faces&Laces festival, FIFA World Cup ads for Fox Sports.

I have graduated from the Moscow University of Radiotechics, Electronics and Automation with a Specialist degree in robotics.

Mechanical props and animatronics
"The Superdeep", 2020
Feature film
Collaboration with Galaxy Effects Studio
The animatronic monster consisted of three parts: the main massive body with two paws, the torso of a human, grown into it, and the electric wheeled platform, thanks to which the monster moved around the set. The entire construction weighed 300 kg net and was controlled by six people.
"Cosmoball", 2020
Feature film
Collaboration with Galaxy Effects Studio
Three aliens were made for the movie Cosmoball. Two of them are puppets with animatronic heads. The third alien is a mask on an actor with just a several movements, controlled by the cable system and air stream.
Robots
Top Dog Create Studio
Tabletop shooting
Adapted an industrial manipulator for tabletop shooting. Wrote software (OS X) for the robot and a customized follow focus for camera lenses. The follow focus was reverse engineered and supplemented with necessary functions.
Big Black Studio
Tabletop shooting, high-speed motion control
Created several devices for pouring liquids and throwing objects for tabletop shooting with MRMC Bolt Cinebot.

Working with the slow-motion robot was a kind of art. It let me capture and highlight the complex physical processes that happen during filming with my own creative vision.
Interactive installations
"Laser Maze", 2012
for Nike

Manufactured the "Laser Maze" quiz attraction control system. Players had to navigate a corridor of laser beams. Terminals with questions about Nike were placed in front of each block of lasers, and if the answers were correct, part of the lasers in the maze were turned off. If a laser beam was interrupted, an alarm went off and the game ended.
"Ice Organ", 2016
in collaboration with Fotometria Lab / Animax studio

Developed and manufactured the electronic part of the audio-visual installation: analog touch sensors for ice pillars, interactive lighting, generative algorithms for sound playback.
Embedded systems
I develop control systems for my projects based on STM32 microcontrollers: I design electrical schematics, printed circuit boards, assemble and program them.

One of my recent projects was a universal controller for 34 different devices in an interactive space in Sochi, in collaboration with Animax studio (Saint Petersburg, Russia).
